Rolling Dice with Polynomials

چکیده

George Sichermann in 1978 discovered a way to label two six-sided dice that produces outcomes identical to the one which occurs when two standard six-sided dice are rolled. In this talk, I will describe a generalization of this result due to Gallian and Rusin which uses polynomial algebra. I will conclude with a description of several variations on the original problem, several open questions, some early results, and possible directions for future (undergraduate) research. Fun dice will be present for you to roll! This talk will be accessible to Juniors and Seniors. Refreshments will be served.

1.1. Example: A Dice-Rolling Problem. In board games like Monopoly, Clue, Parcheesi, and so on, players take turns rolling a pair of dice and then moving tokens on a board according to rules that depend on the dice rolls. The rules of these games are all somewhat complicated, but in most of the games, in most circumstances, the number of spaces a player moves his/her token is the sum of the num...

Characterising Score Distributions in Dice Games

We analyse a variety of ways that comparing dice values can be used to simulate battles in games, measuring the ‘win bias’, ‘tie percentage’, and ‘closeness’ of each variant, to provide game designers with quantitative measurements of how small rule changes can significantly affect game balance. Closeness, a metric we introduce, is related to the inverse of the second moment, and measures how c...

Roll : A Language for Specifying Die-Rolls

Role-playing games (RPG’s) use a variety of methods for rolling dice to add randomness to the game. In the simplest form, a small number of identical dice are rolled and added, but more advanced forms involve cumulative re-rolling of 6’s, doubling the value of doubles, removing the lowest or highest result or counting the number of dice that are below a threshold, and many other weird and wonde...

In Defense of Pseudorandom Sample Selection

Generation of random numbers is a critical component of existing post-election auditing techniques. Recent work has largely discouraged the use of all pseudorandom number generators, including cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generators (CSPRNGs), for this purpose, instead recommending the sole use of observable physical techniques. In particular, simple dice rolling has received a ...

The Efron dice voting system

About …fty years ago, Efron noted some counterintuitive properties of the long-term behavior of contests involving dice. For instance, consider the 6-sided dice whose sides are labeled (4,4,4,4,0,0), (3,3,3,3,3,3), (6,6,2,2,2,2), and (5,5,5,1,1,1). Each die has a 2/3 probability of rolling a higher number than the next one in the list, and the last has the same 2/3 probability of rolling a high...
